There is a campaign that I would encourage every family to take part in. It’s called the Read Aloud 15 MINUTES National Campaign. Here is a recent message from them:
Recent research tells us a readiness gap is already evident in neural activity by age 3 in children who have been read to and those who have not.* Parents often ask me, “when is the best time to begin reading aloud?” The answer, of course, is at birth. But for all those parents who have not yet begun, or who were not aware of the power of reading aloud at birth, the second best time is TODAY!
I think every parent can find 15 minutes in their day to devote to reading to their child. They report in the parent handout below, that if you just set aside 15 minutes a day to read that would add up to more than 450 hours of reading time by Kindergarten! So I challenge our preschool parents to start now if you haven’t already been regularly reading to your child. With you as our partner, we can make sure that your child becomes a life long learner and has a strong foundation for Kindergarten!
